Response to the Manchester Terror Attack

It is impossible for us to take in the horror of Monday night’s terrorist attack in Manchester. Young people and their families were deliberately targeted. Twenty-two are dead, and fifty-nine injured. As I write this, some children remain missing.

We cannot imagine the tormented hatred that led someone to commit this horrendous act of violence against their fellow human beings. We pray and continue to pray for the grieving, the victims, their families and friends. We pray for those who are caring for them and have shown such extraordinary courage and kindness – the professionals from the emergency services, and members of the public reaching out to help.

Our cry goes up to God, “When will this end?” We pray for healing and hope, and that the hearts and minds of those who are drawn to acts of terror are turned from hatred and violence. We pray that we may be agents of peace and reconciliation in the world’s brokenness and fear. We thank God that in Jesus Christ love is stronger than death and is greater than any evil.

Bishop Martin’s full press statement can be read on the diocesan website.

The Church of England has offered a special Prayer for Manchester.

A Collect for Peace
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord,
to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom:
Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies;
that we, surely trusting in your defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Main Road,
